Every fall since 1994, Bloomington has turned its downtown streets into a world music festival. Musicians come from Costa Rica, Ukraine, Morocco, Appalachia, West Africa, and everywhere between. The The Lotus World Music Festival is named for two things: a folk fiddler from Orange County, Indiana named Lotus Dickey, and a flower that grows wild in Monroe County and also everywhere else on earth. A small college town in the middle of Indiana. A stage big enough for the whole world. Both of those things are true at once.
Fun Fact

Quinten Dickey was a fiddle player from rural Orange County, Indiana who went by "Lotus." He was kind, curious, and generous, and people loved him. When a group of Bloomington musicians started a world music festival in 1994, they named it after him — and after the lotus flower, which grows wild in the county lakes. That first night drew 800 people to three stages downtown. Musicians now come from Morocco, Ukraine, Costa Rica, West Africa, and everywhere between. A fiddle player from rural Indiana quietly started something that opened a door to the whole world.
