Most people hear "Illinois" and picture flat. They've never been to Shawnee. In the southern corner of the state, where glaciers never reached, 300-million-year-old sandstone rose up and refused to behave. The result is Garden of the Gods — bluffs, slot canyons, hoodoos, panoramic ridgelines. It's the most-visited wilderness in Illinois, and it looks like it belongs somewhere else entirely.
Fun Fact

Garden of the Gods sits inside Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois — and unlike nearly everything else in the state, it was never touched by glaciers. The ice sheets stopped just north of it. That's why it looks nothing like the rest of Illinois: 300-million-year-old sandstone, shaped by wind and water alone, into formations called Camel Rock, Anvil Rock, and Devil's Smokestack. Illinois keeps this one quietly to itself.
