Betty Willis designed the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign in 1959. She was one of the first female commercial artists in the neon sign business — a field almost entirely dominated by men. She used a diamond shape, which no other city welcome sign used. She filled the letters of "Welcome" with silver dollars as a nod to Nevada's Silver State nickname. When she sold the design to Clark County for $4,000, she didn't copyright it. "It's my gift to the city," she said. The sign has been reproduced on everything imaginable ever since. Betty Willis never made a dollar off any of it.
Fun Fact

The back of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign — the side facing drivers leaving the city — reads "Drive Carefully, Come Back Soon." Most people have never seen it. On October 4, 1999, the sign went dark because the electricity bill hadn't been paid. The most photographed sign in Las Vegas had been accidentally unplugged.

  • The first wash may release a little color, so keep it separate from lighter items.
  • Tumble dry low or hang dry whenever you can.

Drying Tips

  • Avoid high heat to help prevent shrinkage and keep the fabric soft.
  • If using a dryer, choose a low or delicate setting.
  • Remove promptly once dry to reduce wrinkles.

  • Fabric softeners aren’t necessary and may affect the texture.
  • If ironing is needed, turn the shirt inside out and avoid direct heat on the design.
