Pictured Rocks was the first national lakeshore in the United States, designated in 1966. The sandstone cliffs along Lake Superior's shore rise up to 200 feet and are stained red, orange, blue, green, and white by minerals seeping through the rock — iron, copper, manganese, limonite. The name has nothing to do with paintings or petroglyphs. The colors are entirely the lake's doing. The Ojibwe considered this stretch of shoreline alive with spirits and left tobacco offerings at the base of the cliffs. French fur traders called it wonderful and terrifying in the same sentence. Both were right.
Fun Fact

Pictured Rocks gets more snow than almost anywhere in the country, thanks to Lake Superior dumping lake-effect snow on the Upper Peninsula all winter. This creates over 50 named ice formations on the cliff faces every year — frozen waterfalls, ice curtains, columns — that ice climbers come from across the country to scale. The same cliffs that look like a painting in summer look like a cathedral in January.
