In 1920, a company called E.M. Laird built a wood-framed, fabric-covered biplane in Wichita and became the first manufacturer in America to produce commercial aircraft for sale. By 1928, Wichita had sixteen aircraft companies, six engine factories, and eleven airports. It was building a quarter of all U.S. airplanes. During World War II, one out of every eleven American military planes came out of Wichita. The city still makes more general aviation aircraft than anywhere else on earth.
Fun Fact

By 1929, Wichita had over a dozen aircraft companies competing in the same city. Cessna, Beechcraft, Stearman, Travel Air — all operating within miles of each other, poaching each other's engineers, racing to build the next plane. The Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce gave an annual award to whichever city produced the most airplanes. Wichita won so many times they eventually just called themselves the Air Capital of the World and stopped competing.
