Ann Arbor is called Tree Town partly because of its name and partly because it has over 50,000 trees lining its streets and another million on public, private, and university property. The city was named in 1824 by two land speculators named John Allen and Elisha Rumsey — for their wives, both named Ann, and for the bur oak groves on the land they bought for $1.25 an acre. The Ann Arbor Land Company later offered 40 acres to the state of Michigan as the site of the state capitol. They lost the bid to Lansing. The land became the University of Michigan instead.
Fun Fact

When Dutch elm disease swept through Ann Arbor in the mid-20th century and wiped out most of the city's beloved elm canopy, a woman named Elizabeth Dean left the city a $2 million bequest specifically for its trees. The city immediately cut its forestry budget by the exact amount of the interest earned on Dean's gift. It took her friends forming a separate committee to make sure the money actually went to trees. Ann Arbor has always had opinions about trees.
