The Domino Sugar sign has been glowing over Baltimore's Inner Harbor since April 25, 1951. It is 120 feet wide and 70 feet tall. A semi-truck could drive through the hole in the O. The sign was made by the same company that built the classic signs of Times Square. When they briefly turned it off during the 1970s energy crisis, Baltimoreans were not happy about it. The refinery beneath it has been running since 1922, processing 6.5 million pounds of raw cane sugar a day, around the clock, every week, while the sign watches over the harbor. Bawlmer.
Fun Fact

When the original Domino Sugar sign was finally replaced in 2021 after 70 years, Baltimoreans mourned as if they'd lost a family member. Domino donated the old letters to local nonprofits. The souvenir medallions made from the original "D" — which had rusted beyond saving — sold out within hours of a single newspaper mention. Baltimore got a tattoo of this sign before the ink was even dry on the replacement.
