Boston has the oldest subway in America. The Tremont Street tunnel opened in 1897 and is still in use today. The MTA token debuted in 1951 — a small brass coin that got you anywhere in the system, no questions asked. Five different versions were minted over the decades, all the same size and weight, all interchangeable. The token's name lives on in the CharlieCard, named after a folk song about a man trapped on the MTA forever because he couldn't pay the exit fare. Boston turned a transit tragedy into a brand identity. That tracks.
Fun Fact

In 1949, the Kingston Trio recorded a song called "Charlie on the MTA" about a man stuck forever on the Boston subway because he couldn't afford the exit fare — a real fare structure the MTA actually used. The song was originally written as a political campaign jingle. It became a folk classic. When Boston finally retired the token in 2006, they named the replacement system the CharlieCard. Charlie never got off the train. He got the last word.
