The most photographed mountains in North America are also called the Deadly Bells. Unlike most Colorado fourteeners made of hard granite, the Bells are composed of mudstone — soft, crumbly, and unstable. A US Forest Service sign at the base warns of rock that "kills without warning." The color that makes them iconic is the same geology that makes them dangerous. Beauty and peril, inseparable.
