Georgia's official state reptile has been here for 60 million years and digs burrows up to 40 feet long. Those burrows shelter at least 360 other species — indigo snakes, gopher frogs, owls, foxes, insects — making the tortoise one of the most important landlords in the southeastern United States. By the late 20th century the population had dropped by roughly 80%. Conservation efforts helped bring them back. In 2022 the eastern population was removed from the federal endangered list. Sixty million years is a long time to almost lose something.
