The cliffs of Nā Pali rise 4,000 feet straight out of the Pacific on the northwest shore of Kauaʻi. They cannot be reached by road. Polynesian navigators first arrived by canoe around 1200 AD, guided by the stars across more than 2,000 miles of open ocean. For centuries their communities farmed taro in the hanging valleys, fished the shore, and traded by outrigger. By 1930 the valleys were empty. The mountains above receive 400 inches of rain a year — the wettest place on earth — and the water keeps carving. Nā Pali means many cliffs. It has earned the name.
