Hawaii had the hibiscus as its territorial flower since the 1920s, but nobody specified which one. For decades the red variety appeared on postcards and in photographs as the unofficial emblem of the islands. In 1988 the legislature finally settled the question — not with the showy imported red, but with the native yellow hibiscus, pua aloalo, found only in Hawaii. It blooms for a single day. Each flower opens yellow in the morning and is gone by sunset. Hawaii chose the one that belongs only here, even though hardly anyone had been paying attention to it.
