The ring-necked pheasant is not from Iowa. It's not from America at all. It's from Asia, and it arrived in Iowa by accident in 1901 when a thunderstorm flattened an Englishman's game farm in Cedar Falls and scattered 2,000 birds across the countryside. The state spent the next two decades deliberately spreading them further. Iowa eventually made it the state bird. Sometimes a storm just hands you your whole identity.
Fun Fact

William Benton was an Englishman who moved to Cedar Falls and decided to raise pheasants for profit. In 1901 an Iowa thunderstorm wrecked his pens and scattered roughly 2,000 birds across the countryside overnight. He never made a dime off them. The birds thrived, spread across the state, and eventually became Iowa's official state bird. Benton's bad luck became Iowa's whole thing.
