In 1994, a husband-and-wife artist team named Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen were commissioned to make a sculpture for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. They looked at the neoclassical building, looked at the wide green lawn, and decided the building was a badminton net. They made four shuttlecocks — each one eighteen feet tall, five and a half tons — and placed them on either side as though a game of giants had just ended and everyone had gone home. The Kansas City Star called it a giant waste. Today it's on the city's license plates.
Fun Fact

The idea for the shuttlecocks came partly from a Frederic Remington painting inside the museum featuring Native American feathered headdresses. Van Bruggen saw the painting, looked out at the lawn, and something clicked. The feathers became birdies. A nineteenth-century Plains painting became the origin story for Kansas City's most recognizable landmark. Nobody sees that connection coming.
