The Dutch arrived at the mouth of Delaware Bay in 1631, called the place Zwaanendael — Valley of the Swans — and built a whaling settlement. It lasted one year before it was destroyed. But the location held. Fifty years later William Penn arrived, renamed it Lewes, and declared the cape public land. Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution. Lewes was the first town in that first state. It has been living up to both titles ever since.
Fun Fact

Dutch settlers arrived at the mouth of Delaware Bay in 1631 and named their whaling colony Zwaanendael — Valley of the Swans. It was destroyed within a year. The location held anyway. When Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution in 1787, Lewes was already its oldest town — founded 156 years before the country it helped create. It calls itself the First Town in the First State. No one has argued the point.
