Nebraska's State Capitol is the only one in the country built around a functional tower — architect Bertram Goodhue refused to build another building with a Roman dome and designed something that looks more like a skyscraper rising out of a Greek cross. At 400 feet it's the second tallest statehouse in America. On top of the gold-tiled dome stands The Sower, a 19-foot bronze figure scattering seed, facing northwest — toward the fields. The tower windows are shaped like cornstalks. The building was paid for entirely by a special tax levy, completed on budget in 1932. Nebraska has always known what it's building toward.
Fun Fact

To get The Sower to the top of the Capitol dome, workers first hauled the 19-foot bronze figure up to the 15th floor and stored him there while the steel dome structure was prepared. Thousands of people got permission to climb the stairs and visit him. He sat up there for weeks while Nebraska waited. Then they put him where he belongs.Completed in 1932, the Nebraska State Capitol’s 400-foot tower is topped with a 19-foot bronze statue known as “The Sower,” symbolizing the state’s agricultural heritage.
