The sandstone at Valley of Fire is 150 million years old — the remnant of ancient sand dunes from the Jurassic period, compressed and stained red by iron oxide until the whole valley blazes. Nevada got its first state park here in 1934, on Easter Sunday, after the Civilian Conservation Corps spent two years building trails, campgrounds, and three stone cabins by hand. The name came a decade earlier, when an AAA official driving through at sunset reportedly said the whole valley looked like it was on fire. He wasn't wrong. People carved petroglyphs into these rocks 2,500 years ago. The Total Recall Mars scenes were filmed here. Some places are just that kind of place.

Valley of Fire got its name in the 1920s when an AAA road official drove through at sunset and said the whole valley looked like it was on fire. Nevada officially adopted the name, made it the state's first park, and opened it on Easter Sunday 1934. The first year, 9,000 people visited. Now it gets over a million a year. One good sunset, one good line.
