By the 1960s, Omaha's Old Market was dying. The warehouse district that had fed a city since the 1880s sat mostly vacant — wholesale grocery had moved on, the buildings were crumbling, and the city was growing west. A man named Sam Mercer owned a lot of the property and refused to let it go. He converted the old red-brick warehouses into restaurants, galleries, and apartments instead. Most people thought it was a bad idea. The French Café opened in 1969. The cobblestone streets stayed. The cast-iron storefronts stayed. Today the Old Market is the most visited neighborhood in Nebraska. Sam Mercer was right.
Fun Fact

When Sam Mercer proposed turning Omaha's dying warehouse district into an arts and dining neighborhood in the late 1960s, most people thought he'd lost his mind. The first retail shop opened in 1967. The French Café followed in 1969. Critics called it imprudent. The city eventually put it on the National Register of Historic Places. Mercer didn't wait for permission.Omaha’s Old Market district dates back to the 1880s and still features original brick warehouses and the iconic archway that marks the entrance to one of the city’s most beloved neighborhoods.
