In 1692, Salem executed twenty people for witchcraft. More than 200 were accused. The whole thing lasted about a year and ended when the governor's wife was named as a suspect and the governor shut the court down. Massachusetts formally apologized in 1957 — 265 years later. The last convicted Salem witch, Elizabeth Johnson Jr., was officially exonerated in 2022, after a successful lobbying campaign by a class of eighth-grade civics students. Salem has since leaned into it. October is basically a second economy.

Nobody was burned at the stake in Salem. That's a myth. English law didn't allow it. The nineteen people executed in 1692 were hanged. One man, Giles Corey, refused to enter a plea, so the court had him pressed under heavy stones to force a response. He never gave one. His last words, according to legend, were "more weight." Salem does not burn its witches. It crushes them.
