The Cathedral of Saint Paul took the city its name from a log chapel that a priest built overlooking the Mississippi in 1841, in a settlement then called Pig's Eye Landing. The priest named the chapel Saint Paul and suggested the settlement do the same. It did. The current cathedral — the fourth to bear the name — opened in 1915. The dome is 307 feet from the ground. The local newspaper called it the bishop's folly while it was being built, said it was too expensive, too grandiose, and would never fill to capacity. It opened on Palm Sunday 1915 to standing room only at all four masses.
Fun Fact

The city of Saint Paul got its name from a log cabin. A priest named Father Galtier built a tiny chapel overlooking the Mississippi in 1841, in a settlement everyone called Pig's Eye Landing. He named the chapel Saint Paul. A few years later the settlement voted to rename itself. They chose the chapel's name over Pig's Eye. It was a close call. Pig's Eye, Minnesota almost happened.
